Cascade Coffee Charitable Committee visits the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

July 15th, 2016

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Prior to the July 4 holiday weekend, the Cascade Coffee Charitable Giving Committee had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle.  “A fascinating tour left our committee members awe-inspired.  The Gates Foundation is making bold accomplishments in changing the world we live in.  But this isn’t a ‘come and see what Bill and Melinda have done’ thing.  They make it clear about being open, collaborative partners with anyone”.  Said Darren Armstrong, Chairman of the Cascade committee.  “If you’re 12 years old and have an idea that can make an impact, they want to hear about it.  They’re about tangible impact on improving lives around the world.”

The Gates Foundation has become well known for its heavy involvement in developing countries providing resources and vaccines to parts of the world that would otherwise rarely see it.

The Cascade Coffee Charitable Committee are active members in the Community Foundation of Snohomish County, funding many local grants.  In 2016, Cascade Coffee continued to widen its perspective on philanthropy and increased  support in environmental impact and industry sustainability.  Among initiatives the company has been involved with is the Partnership for Gender Equity through the Coffee Quality Institute, the International Women’s Coffee Alliance and the Water Wise Coffee Initiative through Techno-Serve who is also deeply supported by the Gates Foundation.

Cascade Coffee makes huge investment in environmental sustainability commitment, installs thermal oxidizer

February 9th, 2016

Cascade Coffee broadens its commitment to responsible environmental stewardship this week with the installation of state of the art RTO Technology.

“Our commitment to the definitive reduction of our environmental footprint is more than a corporate sustainability policy, and this investment is tangible evidence of that promise,” explains Cascade Coffee CEO Phil Johnson.

With a hefty price tag and hundreds of hours in development and installation, the company began the new capital project more than a year ago and is system testing this week. The RTO, which stands for Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer, is an industrial process for the treatment of exhaust air, in this case, from Cascades’ large scale Probat coffee roasters.

The system is a type of thermal oxidizer that uses a bed of ceramic material to absorb heat from the exhaust gas. It then uses this captured heat to preheat the incoming process gas stream and destroy air pollutants emitted from process exhaust streams at temperatures ranging from 1,500ºF to 1,800ºF. Ultimately, there are nearly zero emissions from the system which more resembles a power plant on the back of Cascade Coffee’s 200,000 square foot facility than a pollution control device. Once final inspection is complete, the unit will be in full operation in the near future. This is a win for the environment, Cascades’ customers and the industry.
